MATERIALS USED FOR FURNITURE PRODUCTION
24.8.2023
The main materials used for production of furniture are particle boards with melamine finish, MDF (natural and veneer) and aluminum profiles. Each of these materials has its features. All together they determine the wide range and allow the implementation of different designs and styles – from classic to modern. We will try to explain the main features and differences between them.
Particle board/ chipboard – as the name implies, they consist of rough wood particles, pressed between two surface layers. Particle board is popular mainly because its decoration successfully imitates different colours and wooden patterns. This material is with excellent price, which makes it the best option when you need excellent price to quality ratio. The disadvantage is in the fact that the technology for production of details from particle board consists of its cutting and edging with special PVC or melamine edges. The edged zones are the weak zone as in time there is a risk of ungluing and moisture infiltration. That’s why the exploitation should be very careful and proper.
Natural MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a little more special material than the particle board. It is made of soft wood with dry pressing at high pressure and temperature, which is why it has finer and homogenous structure. Recently this material has been an important part of furniture production. MDF can be processed well and finishing works are possible. MDF as opposed to particle board can be processed with different ornaments and decorations. These features are a perfect addition to the modern technologies for coating and painting. As for the qualities, MDF has a smooth surface and high strength. Moreover it has a great flexibility and flexural strength.
HDF (High Density Fiberboard). The raw material for the MDF as well as for the HDF is wooden particles made of soft and hard wood, mixed with wax and glue and pressed at high temperature. The first difference between MDF and HDF is that HDF is made at much higher temperature and pressure, which makes the material with a greater strength. Because of that smaller thicknesses are possible to be made - 3-4mm. They are mainly used for backs of the furniture and for drawer bottoms.
In the system of www.garderobi.bg a special custom name for the materials is used. We will try to define here what the different names mean.
Lamina
These are particleboards with melamine cover, with monochrome (colour) and wood patterns.
Lamina Gloss
These are particleboards with melamine cover, with monochrome (colour) and wood patterns.
Technologically they are lacquered with clear polyurethane lacquer – 100% gloss.
Pastel UV
These are MDF boards, which are painted two-sided with high resistant UV cover in colour according to RAL - 9010.
Edges are milled with R 3, R 6, R 9 or R 16.
Pastel
These are MDF boards with acryl covering, waterborne. The edges are R 3, R 6, R 9 or R 16 processed.
Technologically they are first two-sided covered with high resistant UV cover. At next stage the face of the detail is painted with a certain colour. The finishing of the surface is with MATT structure.
Pastel Gloss
These are MDF boards with waterborne, acryl cover. The edges are R 3, R 6, R 9 or R 16 processed.
Technologically they are two-sided sealed with neutral high resistant UV cover. Next, the face of the detail is painted with a certain colour. Then the face is lacquered with clear polyurethane lacquer - 100% gloss.
